Psalm 119 is a beautiful song about the glory of God’s word. King David wrote it using the Hebrew alphabet as a way to remember and meditate on the value of God’s word. The Hebrew alphabet begins, aleph, bait, gimmel, dallet, hay, vav ……. etc. Today we will look at just the portion for the letter “B”.
If you were to write out the qualities of God’s word that you wanted your children to remember, and you used the ABCs to do it, what would it sound like? Could you come up with a list of values for each letter? How about 8 verses starting with the same letter of the alphabet?
David was so mindful of God’s work and the value of God’s word in his life that he could weave it into a beautiful alphabet song to help his kids and the Israelites remember the value of God’s word.
The Puritans also wanted to make sure their kids remembered and put the basics of Christian theology and the bible to the alphabet (as the picture above shows).
From the first of this week we agreed that we must remember God’s word and meditate on it! We must think it down into our souls so that it is effective for us.
Read: Psalm 119
BET (pronounced “bait”)
9How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word.
10With my whole heart, I have sought you.
Don’t let me wander from your commandments.
11I have hidden your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
12Blessed are you, Yahweh.
Teach me your statutes.
13With my lips,
I have declared all the ordinances of your mouth.
14I have rejoiced in the way of your testimonies,
as much as in all riches.
15I will meditate on your precepts,
and consider your ways.
16I will delight myself in your statutes.
I will not forget your word.
Think:
David says he will not forget God’s word (v.16). He understood that what he thinks about he becomes. He realized that God had the only right view on the world and people (v.12). He realized that God was wisdom and righteousness. He realized that only by God’s word was he going to keep himself pure (v.8).
Are you aware of the value of God’s word? Have you created ways to help yourself remember the word?
Do:
Take a piece of paper and write out the alphabet in a column. Come up with 1 value of God’s word for each and every letter. Maybe do this with your kids at dinner tonight (after you have done it for yourself!!!). Have some fun with it.
Click on the Puritan alphabet picture above and read what it says. It is pretty interesting. You can return to this page by hitting the "backspace" button.
Take time and memorize Hebrew 4:12 this week. Write it on a 3x5 and stick it in your car, on the fridge, on your mirror …. wherever. Memorize it in a translation that you are used to and read on a regular basis.
Pray
Father, thank you for your awesome word by which you guide and direct my life. I desire to honor you with my life and I will do that when I listen, learn and obey your word. Help me to remember you and the Scriptures as I go about my day today. May Jesus, your Son, be glorified in me today. I surrender to you. In Jesus name, amen.
